The Portal Market was born in Pomo Indian country in Northern California, and carries with it the blessings from the elders of Lake County. Lake County has been called the "healing nation" by many elders who knew that this was a land of hot springs and healing waters. It is with this sense of healing and nuturing that the Portal Market uses as a criterion to select products and services.

One of the elders who teaches Native American weaving techniques in Lake County is Patti "Buffalo Woman" Mix who has lived in Northern California for over 25 years. She learned to weave from her Cherokee grandmother.

She began weaving when she was seven years old. Buffalo Woman's "Spirit Baskets and Necklaces" are featured on the Portal Market as a remembrance of the spirit of all the Native American ancestors of Pomo Indian Country.

Buffalo Woman's Spirit Necklaces and Sprit Baskets are truly Native American art. These "Spirit Baskets and Necklaces" are truly collector items from a very old craft that is nearly extinct. Featured in her work is the "sacred seven stitch" technique that Buffalo Woman is passing down to other tribal members in Lake County and other counties in N. California.
