"If tea is your passion, Norwood is your sage and this book is your guide."- Michael Harney in the Christmas catalog of Harney & Sons Fine Teas

James Norwood Pratt is widely acknowledged as the prophet of the present trend toward
tea in the US on account of his classic work, The Tea Lover's Treasury, which
appeared in 1982 with a first printing of 15,000 copies. It took three years before a second
printing was needed, but after gradually finding an audience, the book produced an impact
out of all proportion to its total sales of around 70,000 copies.
Many of these readers not all of whom liked teałand tea lovers not all of whom liked reading found themselves united in a newly awakened appreciation of this ancient and humble drink. And they loved Mr. Pratt's use of the language for story-telling and sly observations which added unsuspected dimensions to the pleasure of tea time. The James Norwood Pratt Tea Society thus may be said to have come into existence imperceptibly and to have grown in secret almost up to the present day.
As avid readers of James Norwood Pratt's writings who relish both his prose on the page and his company in person, we members of the Tea Society have come to share Mr.Pratt's contagious passion for tea. Beyond benefiting from his tea expertise and recommendations, we find his views of other times and cultures illuminating and we believe his voice is worth amplifying to be more widely heard and enjoyed.
