A composite is the combination of thermoset or thermoplastic resin systems, textiles (woven,braided or sticthed), fibres, core materials, inert particle/powder fillers and chemical additives that are engineered and combined to address specific performance requirements. Qualities include structural integrity, service life, vibration dampening, weight, strength, surface smoothness and the ability to shape complex compound curves plus temperature, humidity, chemical and corrosion resistance. Material and process selection are both interdependent. Factors affecting material and process selection are cost, time, labor intensity, weight, ease of manufacturing, quality in the finished bust, mission specific and toxicity.
