Quercetin is a powerful bioflavonoid which has a stabilizing effect on the cell membranes of white blood cells called mast cells and basophils. When the body reacts to something that it is allergic to, the body responds by sending out antibodies (immunoglobulin E/IgE class.) These IgE antibodies attach themselves to the irritating allergen and form an immune complex. When this immune complex contacts the surface IgE receptors on the mast cells and basophils, these cells "de-granulate" (release their granules). Granules are packets of inflammatory compounds like histamine.
Histamine, leukotrienes and other inflammatory compounds are what causes the itching, sneezing, reddened eyes and skin associated with allergic reactions. In asthma, these compounds cause the constriction of the bronchial passages making it difficult to breathe. Quercetin helps the body resist this "hair trigger" allergic response by making the mast cells and basophils less likely to de-granulate.
Bromelain is a natural mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from pineapple. It possesses anti-inflammatory properties and aids in the absorption of quercetin.
Licorice root contains a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic compound called glycyrrhizin. Glycyrrhizin increases the life of natural cortisol by suppressing the enzyme that breaks it down into cortisone. This makes licorice useful in treating allergies, asthma, eczema and upper respiratory conditions. Nettle root contains compounds which are anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory. A randomized, double-blind, clinical trial has shown the usefulness of nettles in the treatment of allergic rhinitis or hayfever.
Vitamin C & pantothenic acid support the adrenal glands. These glands secrete cortisol, a hormone which helps the body counter inflammation and allergies.
Zinc is essential for immune system health and protects mucous membranes, both of which may become stressed and destabilized during allergic responses.
Magnesium is necessary for energy production, which is essential to immune health, and has been found useful in cases of asthma.
Vitamin B6 assists in regulating inflammatory conditions.
